   I am all for free software but how would someone like me, an indie developer make a living from creating free software?

   The same way that I do. People pay you to create software that is useful to them. Get a contract to create the software, make sure they pay you – most likely they won’t care if the resulting software is Free Software or not, so long as they get to use it. As a bonus it’s likely they’ll get enhancements for free if the code is Free Software, as others who find it useful will contribute.
