I explain the Free Software Definition in my own words while reading their definition to the Camera. Sci Fi Special Effects are used for the first time in this original www.OSGUI.com Tech Show episode. 1 = The freedom to run the program, for any purpose 2 = The freedom to study how the program works, and change it to make it do what you wish 3 = The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor 4 = The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements (and modified …

and the more it’s controlled, the less ‘free’ it will eventually become. it’s nice to see linux and gnu stuff have made it this far. i think the real changes in the world are not about ideals, but about alternatives.
tyranny can be much better, too, if there exists the alternative of democracy and vice-versa.
nowadays even microsoft can’t leech on people like they used to in the ’90s with sh*t like windows 98 and me. and that’s something we have linux (and partly apple) to thank for.

That is not entirely correct… These companies are important because devs get paid to work on open source projects. So dev time is greatly reduced. Without them i don’t think the code would be different… it would just take longer.
Many open source based companies have come and gone, but the code remains. So the fact of the matter is that it is not the companies that are essential, it is the code and community. However, the relationship is symbiotic.

that internet filtering is really thick. i thought only countries that have highly authoritarian leadership do that, and even those tend to loosen up with time.. i’m sure they’re trying to cover it up with some hypocritical story about protecting children and restricting piracy.. you have my most honest sympathy.
and sorry about spamming your video with comments, i think i’ll stop now.
i would make a video response, but my webcam is crappy and my face is uninteresting.

you’re probably right, although imho you can’t ignore the organising and standardisation effect they have on various code bases.

Also, the open source world is not a democracy. e.g. there is no vote on weather we should move to Gnome 3 or not. It is not communism either. e.g. not everyone contributes.
It is more a meritocracy led by a benevolent dictator(s). A project leader makes the final decision for the benefit of all. If he doesn’t, the code is free and it will get forked. As for the community, the more you do, the louder your voice is. Get involved and get a dev to do what you want, or the ultimate… DIY!
