Why spend money on software when you can get all this for free! Why download software illegally when there is plenty of open source software just waiting for you to discover it! This is a demonstration of the software i use on a daily basis without having to pay for it. To counteract the opinion that Linux is difficult to use, i show how easy it is: i have everything i need. I use Debian Linux with the Gnome interface and Beryl for cute visual effects and the cube of virtual desktops. Some …

It’s great to see someone helping make people aware of such useful things as free windows alternatives, it looks nice and easy and with a few extra things that windows can’t do as well! And all legal, brilliant!
    Thanks sermoa!

    Thanks! :)
I started on Linux out of necessity. My computer crashed so badly that i could not even reinstall Windows. I had a copy of Mandriva lying around that i got free with a magazine. I thought “Might be worth a try” … it took me a little while to get used to it, but now i’d never go back!

Did gave ubuntu a try. then I realized I have to relearn everything and I have a bunch of files I can’t use w/ it. It was really scary when I uninstalled it and Windows would not boot up! Thank god I had access to another computer to use to fix it.

    Linux is faster

  16. cgofme Says:

It was just lack of experience, that’s all. Bunch of files you couldn’t use was the same bunch of files you couldn’t open because you didn’t install proper application. Just like on windows. The difference is on Windows you would have to buy those applications and on linux…? apt-get what_i_need_for_free

  17. cgofme Says:

sermoa, I know it’s obvious but pointing out all those applications run in the same time and you’re still able to capture the screen in the real time would be a good punchline. The same rig on windows probably wouldn’t make it. And you didn’t mention games – almost all of the games developed for Windows can run on linux with wine so… I just want to agree with you. Why paying for something you can get for free. Good movie.

  18. sermoa Says:

Yes, that’s a very good point about the multiple applications running. My computer is not an especially powerful one, but Linux handles its resources extremely well.

I’m not really a gamer but i manage to play SecondLife just fine under Linux. The only thing i’ve never managed to get working is the push-to-talk.

  19. cgofme Says:

Oh, girl, believe me… You’re not a gamer because you don’t have a decent joystick, hehehe. I’ve won two controllers and now my 26yo sister can’t live without UGH! (it’s abandonware, you can run it with dosbox for linux). And partying with friends evolved into something more *ekhm* civilized… I mean we still drink but now we pass out in order ;D

I meant the loosers always drink double… ;)

Linux is not difucult to use.
    is difucult to CONFIGURE.
    just use ubuntu,suse,fedora etc….
once you know how the system works move to debian.
once you got debian you can use arch linux, gentoo linux or slackware.
    a real man distro.

  22. 24oscar24 Says:

sermoa: is that debian 4.0 etch?

  23. mindhaze Says:

I’m confused… If throughout the years I’ve run all of those, did a 10 page essay on the installation and configuration of Debian, and started learning nix with Slackware.. and now settling with Ubuntu.. I don’t really understand the “Real Man” distro (31337) anymore. They all do the same, and are all just as configurable as the next. I used to run around saying the same thing a number of years ago until someone put me in my place in an argument over Slackware vs. Red Hat.

    Think about it..
